Biography of Late Archbishop Patrick Ebosele Ekpu
Early Life and Education: Archbishop Patrick Ebosele Ekpu was born on October 26, 1931, in Uromi, Edo State, Nigeria. He hailed from Uromi in Esan North-East Local Government Area of Edo State. His early education was at various missionary schools in his hometown, where he developed a strong foundation in the Catholic faith. He continued his education at St. Peter Claver’s College in Okene, Kogi State, and later at St. Paul’s Minor Seminary in Benin City.
Priestly Ordination and Early Ministry: Archbishop Ekpu was ordained as a priest on January 7, 1961. This marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to the Catholic Church and the spiritual growth of his community. As a young priest, he served in multiple parishes within the old Benin Diocese, becoming known for his deep spirituality, dedication to his parishioners’ welfare, and his evangelical zeal.
Episcopal Appointment: In 1971, at the age of 39, Patrick Ebosele Ekpu was appointed as the Coadjutor Bishop of Benin City by Pope Paul VI. He was consecrated on September 5, 1971. Following the death of Bishop Patrick Joseph Kelly, he became the first indigenous Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Benin City on March 21, 1973.
